Buy Now Pay Later” (BNPL) services like Klarna, Afterpay, and Affirm are everywhere—offering instant access to purchases without upfront payment. But is this just a convenient tool, or a subtle path to financial bondage? Today, we’ll examine BNPL through the lens of biblical stewardship.

How Buy Now, Pay Later Works & Why It’s Popular

  • BPNL is absolutely a form of debt.
  • It’s the opposite of layaway. You used to have to actually pay for the product in full before you could take the product home.
  • BNPL splits payments into smaller installments, often interest-free for a certain period of time—making purchases feel more affordable.
  • Companies market it as a smart budgeting tool, but in reality, it encourages spending beyond one’s means.
  • The emotional appeal: instant gratification without the immediate financial sting.

The Hidden Dangers of Buy Now Pay Later

  • Encourages impulsive spending—“If I don’t have to pay now, why wait?”
  • Creates the illusion of affordability, leading to overcommitment.
  • Missed payments result in fees, high interest, and credit score damage. (missed payment in the window of interest free could result in high interest payments from the last 12 months…)
  • Proverbs 22:7—“The borrower is slave to the lender.” Even small debts can pile up.

Biblical Wisdom on Debt & Contentment

  • Scripture warns against debt as a form of financial bondage (Romans 13:8).
    • Owe no one anything... (Romans 13:8, ESV)
  • Wise stewardship means having control over the flow of your money, not letting money control you.
  • The importance of patience, contentment, and saving before making purchases (1 Timothy 6:6-8).
    • Delayed gratification…

Is Buy Now Pay Later ever a good option?

  • Perhaps. Drew’s example of furniture in his home. They had the money to cover it. But the BPNL was interest free for a year. So instead of paying it all up front, they let their money collect more interest in their accounts before paying off the furniture. At any time they could have paid off the debt, and would have been ahead of just giving all the money on day one of the purchase.
    • But be wise about this. Remember, the borrower is still a slave to the lender.

Save first, spend later.

  • If you can’t afford it now, should you really buy it?
  • Save first, spend later—Delayed gratification, as we mentioned earlier, it will let you go far in life!
  • Build a budget that prioritizes needs over wants.
  • Use wisdom in financial decisions—if you struggle with big impulse purchases, seek accountability before large purchases.
  • Trust God’s provision instead of leaning on financial shortcuts.

Stewardship Application

  • Buy Now Pay Later isn’t just about payments—it’s about mindset. Are you truly stewarding your finances, or letting convenience dictate your choices?
  • Take an honest look at your spending habits. Are you practicing self-control and contentment?
  • Steward wisely and faithfully (Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful. (1 Corinthians 4:2, ESV)
  • Remember—financial freedom comes from discipline, not easy payment plans.
