Romans 12:1-2 ESV
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Be Transformed by the Renewal of your Mind
So many times, we meet with people and we find that they have lots of luxuries, and they prioritize their own comfort. Occasionally, they donate to the Red Cross. Then they pay their bills. If there’s anything left at the end of the month, they put something in their savings. But when it comes to money, we need to have a different set of priorities. The Bible teaches us to live with our money in a different way. So today, we will take some time to walk through this transformed way of thinking about how we prioritize and spend our money in a Biblical manner. When your are transformed by the renewal of your mind, the way you manage your finances radically changes.
The 5 Biblical Financial Priorities
- Give
- God is our model for giving. We give because God gave (Jn 3:16)
- Our giving should be focused on the local church (general fund)
- We should give with an investment mentality.
- Save
- Savings should be our second priority after giving, but before other spending commitments.
- Savings is a sign of wisdom
- It helps us to be prepared for unexpected expenses, build stronger marriages, and stay out of debt.
- Spend
- Pay to all you owe. By doing this, we are upholding our “obligation,” and our “pledge” to others. In the big picture of things, we speak well to our word and to our testimony!
- Walk in a worthy manner. As it is written in the book of James, we need to not just be hearers of the Word but also doers!
- Do all for the Glory of God. In all that we do, even with our personal finances, and specifically here with our spending, we are to bring glory to God in it.
- Offerings
- Giving above and beyond category 1 giving to the local church.
- Supporting missionaries, church building campaigns, or other non-profit organizations and ministries as well as helping a neighbor in need.
- Set aside a predetermined amount in your budget to look out for the needs of others.
- Luxuries
- God richly provides us with everything to enjoy.
- God wants us to enjoy and to find pleasure in those things that He provides.
- Luxuries are not inherently bad, but wealth can be deceiving.

Stewardship Application
Be transformed by the renewal of your mind. There is an ongoing renewal that needs to be happening as we combat materialism and selfishness with our money. We need to be reminding ourselves of who God is, what He has done, and what He has called us to do. We must live the way He has called us to live, and He will enable us to do the things that He has called us to do. He will equip us with everything that is needful to honor Him and to live a Godly life.
