In today’s episode…let’s look at some practical steps to help you become an even better steward as we enter this black friday shopping season!
The Psychology Behind Black Friday Shopping
Understanding Retail Tactics:
- Retailers create a sense of urgency with limited-time offers, doorbusters, and “only while supplies last” promotions.
- There is psychological pressure to buy now or miss out (FOMO), which can lead to impulse purchases and overspending.
- Increasing the list price during a “sale” and selling it on sale at its normal price.
Key Takeaway: Awareness of these tactics can help listeners stay grounded and make more rational shopping decisions.
Practical Tips to Avoid Overspending
- Set a Budget:
- Set a strict budget before Black Friday shopping begins. Allocate how much you want to spend as a whole (what fits in your budget) and also, break it down to how much you want to spend per person (list them by name!)
- Allocate funds for specific categories, such as gifts, personal items, and essentials.
- Use cash or a prepaid card to stick to the budget and avoid accumulating credit card debt.
- Make a Shopping List:
- Create a detailed shopping list of items they need or have planned to buy.
- Stick to the list and avoid impulse buys.
- Prioritize high-need or high-discount items to make the most of the budget.
- Do Your Research:
- Research prices before Black Friday to identify true deals.
- Compare prices across different retailers, including online vs. in-store options.
- Tools or apps that help track prices and find the best deals.

Strategies for Smart Shopping
Don’t go broke this Black Friday. Shop smart!
- Plan Ahead:
- Plan your shopping day, including which stores to visit first and how to navigate online sales.
- Take advantage of early sales or preview events to avoid the last-minute rush and potential overspending.
- Avoid Financing Offers:
- Don’t go into debt due to an impulse purchase.
- Do not buy now pay later
- Think Long-Term:
- Consider the long-term value of their purchases—will it still be useful or appreciated months from now?
- Discuss how to avoid buying items just because they’re on sale and focusing on what truly adds value to their life.
Stewardship Application
While there isn’t a specific verse directly addressing holiday shopping, a passage of scripture like Proverbs 21:20 which says “A wise man saves for the future, but the foolish man spends whatever he gets,” is what I would consider one of the best that exemplify the concept of being wise with purchases, especially during a season often associated with excessive spending
And let us not forget that God owns everything, we are just the stewards of what He has put into our care, for His purposes, in this short life that He give us. Verses like these speak to God being the supreme owner of all things, even what is in your bank account.
- Deuteronomy 10:14 “To the Lord your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it”.
- Exodus 19:5: “All the earth is Mine”
- Job 41:11: “Whatever is under the whole heaven is Mine”
- Psalm 24:1: “The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, / the world, and all who live in it”
- Haggai 2:8: “The silver and gold is mine,” declares the Lord Almighty
- Romans 11:36: “Everything comes from God; everything exists by his power; and everything is intended for his glory”
So don’t go broke this black friday! This holiday shopping season, let’s Glorify God with what He has blessed us with. So consider setting a budget, make a list, do your research, and shop intentionally, wise and smart to avoid going broke on Black Friday, all for the Glory of God!
