We’re back with Pastor Drew Gysi to ask him questions about the spiritual elements of Biblical financial stewardship.

What Does the Bible Say About the Role of Money in a Christian’s Life?

Money plays a significant role in our lives, but as Christians, we must ensure it holds the right place in our hearts. The Bible teaches that money should never be our master—only Christ should have that position.

What Money’s Role Ends Up Being for Most of Us: The Master

  • 1 Timothy 6:10 warns us that “the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.”
  • Many of us become entrenched in the pursuit of wealth, allowing our love for the world to eclipse our love for the Lord.
  • 1 Timothy 6 also speaks about how this pursuit of money can lead to destruction if we allow it to consume us.
  • We must ensure that Christ is first and primary, never letting money take control. Instead, we should cultivate a deeper love for Jesus.

What Money’s Role is Supposed to Be: A Tool

  • Money should serve as a tool to take care of our families and build up God’s Kingdom.
  • The problem arises when we stop seeing money as a tool and start viewing it as our master.
  • How can money be used for spiritual growth?
    • Giving to the Lord
    • Blessing others
    • Providing for our families
  • The danger comes when our faith in God shrinks, and our “faith” in money grows.

Does My Pastor Know How Much I Give?

It Depends on the Church…and the Pastor

  • Many pastors prefer not to know who gives and how much.
  • Church staff often handle financial records, but some pastors may see certain giving patterns.
  • Some pastors want to know in order to express gratitude and encourage generosity.
  • However, Jesus teaches in Matthew 6:3-4 that giving should be done privately: “But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.”

What Are the Possible Dangers of Pastors Knowing Who Gives?

  1. Favoritism – A pastor might be tempted to alter their message to avoid offending big givers.
  2. Special Treatment – A pastor might overlook issues in a major donor’s life, fearing they’ll leave with their financial support.
  3. A Better Model – When everyone gives, the church is stronger. Ministries shouldn’t rely on a small percentage of givers but should encourage all members to contribute.
  • If you’re unsure how your church handles this, ask leadership about their approach to financial transparency.

Common Misconceptions About Money That Christians Have

1. “We’re Owners – It’s Mine!”

  • The Bible teaches that we are stewards, not owners. Everything belongs to God (Psalm 24:1).

2. “The More Money I Have, The Fewer Problems I Will Face.”

  • Wealth does not eliminate stress. In fact, it can create more challenges (Ecclesiastes 5:10).

3. “I Might Need It Someday!” (Hoarding Mentality)

  • Trust should be placed in God’s provision, not in accumulating excessive wealth (Luke 12:15-21).

4. “God Will Provide – I Don’t Need to Plan.”

  • While God provides, He also calls us to wisely manage our resources (Proverbs 21:5).

How Do I Know if My Church’s Resources Are Being Used Wisely?

  • Transparency is key. Churches should have clear financial reporting.
  • A high-level budget should be available for congregants.
  • More detailed budgets can be accessed with guidance from leadership.
  • Regular internal audits and periodic external audits help ensure accountability.

The Trust Factor

  • Leaders must be held accountable, but they also need to be trusted.
  • Small expenses (like youth group pizza nights) should not become a point of contention if they serve ministry goals.
  • If trust issues exist, they should be addressed biblically—not based on personal preferences.

How Can Christians View Tithing as Worship and Trust in God?

  • Tithing is an act of faith: “God, I can live better on 90% than I can on 100%.”
  • We cannot outgive God—He is a good Father who provides for His children.
  • Giving is not just about maintaining the church building; it’s about life transformation.
    • Your giving helps others hear the Gospel.
    • It provides resources for ministries to flourish.
    • It fosters community outreach and Kingdom growth.

Closing Application

  • Finances are challenging, even for pastors. Extend grace to your church leaders in financial matters.
  • Seek expert advice when needed—pastors provide biblical wisdom, but financial professionals can offer practical stewardship guidance.
  • If you’re a pastor struggling with finances, don’t let it hinder your ministry. Reach out for support and guidance.

Pastors: If you’re listening and struggling in this area, we want to help. Stewardship is a biblical responsibility, and we can walk alongside you to ensure that your personal and church finances are on the right track.
